No 7: THE SMALL TOWN SHUFFLE
KATIE KERN
There was a small jewelry store on the corner of mainstreet
5 pizza places snuggled into a mile radius
Construction took years where it would take weeks here
Moms took their deluxe SUVs to their manicure appointments
Parents lined up densely on the metro platform waiting to go into work while simultaneously nannies walked off the trains
The Westchester morning shuffle begins
Yoga pants fill the only Starbucks in town
Kids shake standing on their cul-de-sacs in the cold before congregating on the school buses
In the afternoon, middle schoolers strut to rite aid to get bags of candy
Soccer practice and dance class take up the evenings and at dusk, parents flood back into the town from the city
This same small town dance, I haven’t witnessed in four years, starts up again the next morning
