LINDSEY MACHADO

Lindsey Machado had a desire to create a space for her community. She was inspired by the women who raised her and paid homage to what they had taught her. Lindsey's father died when she was young, and she was raised by a single mother with an extended family consisting of six aunts. As a kid, her peers were convinced that she came from a line of witches due to her family history. But Lindsey saw this as a blessing. Especially the privilege of seeing the diversity of women. She saw the women in her life weave their own webs and create beautiful lives for themselves and for the people they care about. She wanted to symbolize this aspect by weaving and beading her own web, helping to bind the Safe Space structure she created. Lindsey also found it important to put different garments from different decades she had restored to represent her ancestors, relatives, friends, strangers, and herself. Lindsey's work is often whimsical, and there are many themes of fairies showing up in her work. Throughout her artistic history, they have been a symbol of hope. Lindsey wanted the piece to be fully immersive, surrounding it in jasmine. Making a light that looks like a trumpet flower that she had in her front yard as a child. She found it important to use a wide variety of different mediums to make it magical. During the process of creating this piece, she did not make it just for women but for the beauty and feminine culture and the ideals of supporting each other.
