No 4: BECOMING “THAT” GIRL

ZOË SEGURA

a visual piece

This multimedia sculpture features a stomach and intestines floating in a microwave body. The “head” of the body features a holographic experimental film featuring myself in the cycle of becoming “that” girl. This trend has been aimed towards women to tell them how they can be the best version of themselves. It promotes unrealistic expectations of women including pushing restrictive dieting, extreme exercise and a false sense of wellbeing. Often products are marketed towards women as a self improvement tool. To me this trend is disguised in misogyny and capitalism. Women are still being told what to do, how to eat, and what makes them worthy of being treated with respect in our society. In creating this piece I wanted to share how toxic this trend can be to young girls and women. In breaking the mindset that we need to be better than we are now, we can achieve the wellness this trend promises.
